UV lamp categories describe different source technologies, but a category is not a replacement part number. Low-pressure, amalgam, and medium-pressure lamps belong in specific combinations of electrical supply, cooling, housing, and optical components. A replacement request should identify that combination before comparing length, output descriptions, or price.
Start with the original lamp reference and the equipment nameplate. Add the ballast or power-supply model when available. If a maintenance record names only “UV bulb,” take clear photographs of the labels and connectors. That small amount of identification work can prevent a physically similar but electrically unsuitable component from reaching the installation bench.
What the category tells you
Low-pressure mercury lamps and low-pressure amalgam lamps are related technologies. An amalgam construction uses a mercury-containing alloy to help manage mercury vapor conditions. Light Sources describes its low-pressure amalgam range as a way to obtain greater UV output within its specified operating designs. That does not mean an amalgam lamp can replace any conventional lamp using the same socket.
Medium-pressure lamps form another equipment category with different source characteristics and operating requirements. When a reactor or curing machine specifies one of these technologies, retain that designation in the replacement inquiry. Treat a change of lamp technology as an equipment engineering question, not as a routine substitution chosen from nominal wattage alone.
Identify the electrical match
Record the complete lamp code, including suffixes, and the matching ballast reference. Voltage labels can refer to different parts of a system: the supply entering the cabinet is not automatically the operating condition across the lamp. Keep photographs of both labels so those values are not combined into a misleading single specification.
Connector arrangement, pin configuration, lead length, and cable termination also matter. A connector that can be pushed into place is not proof of an approved electrical match. Do not alter a connector or defeat a detection feature to make an uncertain lamp operate. Resolve the reference with the equipment documentation or responsible service provider.
Describe the complete mechanical envelope
Lamp length can mean overall length, base-to-base length, or another defined reference. Record the manufacturer's terminology and include a sketch showing the measurement points if the original information is unclear. Add the maximum outside diameter and any connector or lead clearance that affects insertion.
The surrounding quartz sleeve has its own dimensions. A lamp's nominal length should not be copied directly into a sleeve order. Internal usable depth, the closed-end profile, lamp supports, and space for electrical connections must be considered separately. Existing sleeve and lamp part numbers are especially useful when ordering both components together.
Preserve the equipment's operating requirements
Cooling provisions, mounting orientation, operating cycles, and monitoring requirements belong to the equipment specification. A higher advertised output is not automatically an improvement in that system. It may create a different demand on the power supply, thermal arrangement, or process controls. Ask the equipment designer to assess proposed changes before ordering a substitute technology.
Similarly, a lamp visibly producing light does not establish that the UV system is meeting its process requirement. Use the maintenance instructions and monitoring provisions for the actual equipment. Replacement intervals, alarm interpretation, and return-to-service checks should come from that documentation rather than from a general lamp-category description.
Prepare a replacement request that can be checked
Send the full lamp and ballast references, equipment model, label photographs, connector photographs, quantity, and required date. Identify whether you need an original manufacturer's component, an evaluated replacement option, or help identifying an obsolete reference. Those are different purchasing requirements and should be clear at the start.
