Matching a UV lamp to its ballast

Matching a UV lamp to a ballast begins with the equipment specification, not the shape of the connector. The ballast or power supply is part of the lamp's operating system. A replacement should be checked against the complete lamp reference, electrical requirements, and control arrangement before it is treated as interchangeable.

This guide covers the information useful for a purchasing inquiry. Electrical diagnosis, wiring changes, and return-to-service work belong with qualified personnel following the equipment documentation. If the original reference is unavailable, keep the system offline as required by its service procedure while the component identification is resolved.

Gather both labels

Photograph the lamp marking and the ballast or power-supply label. Include all suffixes, revision markings, connector labels, and any equipment-specific part number. A shortened code can omit a distinction that matters to the match. If a label is partly unreadable, provide the photograph and identify the uncertain characters instead of silently completing the code from memory.

Record the machine or reactor model separately. An equipment manufacturer may assign its own service reference to a component supplied by another manufacturer. Both references can be useful, especially when the machine has changed across production revisions or has previously received a service modification.

Separate input supply from lamp operation

An electrical label may describe the power entering a ballast rather than the conditions supplied to the lamp. Keep input values, output values, and control connections identified as separate fields in the inquiry. A shared incoming supply voltage does not establish that two ballasts serve the same lamp.

Likewise, lamp wattage alone is not a complete matching rule. Ask for the manufacturer's approved lamp and ballast combination, or the documented evaluation of an alternative. The review may require information beyond what is printed in a short storefront title, including the specific starting and operating arrangement for the equipment.

Document the connectors and leads

Photograph each connector from the side and from the mating face. Show pin arrangement, keying, lead length, and the position of any retaining or locating feature. Include a scale where it helps identify the mechanical envelope, while keeping critical measurements in a separate sketch or drawing.

Do not modify a connector to make an uncertain component fit. Mechanical compatibility is one requirement among several. A connector can also carry identification or control functions that are not obvious from a quick inspection. Preserve the existing connection scheme unless the equipment documentation authorizes a reviewed change.

Include controls and monitoring

Describe the controls that interact with the lamp supply, such as an enable signal, output adjustment, alarm indication, or machine interlock. Provide the relevant documentation rather than guessing a signal type from wire color. The person reviewing the component needs to understand its place in the equipment's control system.

If the request follows an alarm, record the exact message and service history for the responsible technician. Purchasing a replacement component is different from diagnosing the alarm. A new lamp or ballast should not be presented as a guaranteed remedy without the checks required by the equipment's troubleshooting procedure.

Distinguish a spare from a redesign

For a direct spare, specify that the order must maintain the approved equipment configuration. State whether original manufacturer supply is required and whether any substitution needs written acceptance. This makes the purchasing condition clear before price and availability are compared.

For an obsolete component or a development project, identify the features that must be retained and the changes the equipment engineer is willing to evaluate. A proposed alternative may need mechanical, electrical, control, and process review. Do not let the urgency of a shutdown turn a proposal into an unreviewed compatibility claim.
