When to replace a quartz sleeve

Quartz sleeve replacement should be based on the equipment's maintenance requirements and the condition of the actual part. A calendar reminder is useful, but it cannot describe a chipped sealing edge, a damaged closed end, or deposits that remain after the approved cleaning procedure. Keep the sleeve reference and service history together so a replacement decision can be made with useful evidence.

The sleeve and lamp have different roles and may have different service requirements. Replacing a lamp does not automatically establish that its sleeve is suitable for continued service. Equally, a sleeve that appears clear should not be treated as proof that the complete UV system is performing as required.

Start with the equipment instructions

Locate the service procedure for the exact system model and revision. Identify the specified inspection, cleaning, replacement, and return-to-service steps. If the equipment is part of a controlled process, include the site's maintenance and quality requirements. These documents determine the applicable interval and acceptance criteria; a general article cannot set one interval for every installation.

VIQUA's maintenance guidance explains that mineral deposits can foul a sleeve and reduce transmitted UV. It advises following the manufacturer's replacement procedure and considering replacement when fouling is severe or difficult to remove. Apply those principles within the instructions for your equipment rather than extending one manufacturer's recommendations to every reactor.

Distinguish deposits from permanent damage

Record what is visible before cleaning: location, color, extent, and whether the condition is inside or outside the sleeve. A photograph can help compare changes over time. Follow the specified cleaning procedure, then inspect again. If the original concern remains, avoid repeatedly escalating the cleaning method without confirming that the material, finish, and seals tolerate it.

A deposit that can be removed and a damaged surface are different findings. Chips, cracks, damaged end features, and persistent surface changes deserve review against the equipment's acceptance criteria. Do not reinstall a visibly damaged component simply because it fits into the housing. Ask the responsible service person to determine the appropriate disposition.

Inspect the features that hold and seal the part

The main tube is only part of a sleeve's geometry. The open end, closed end, flange, shoulder, and locating surfaces may determine whether it seats correctly. Note damage or wear in those areas separately from general cloudiness. A small defect near a seal can be significant even when the remainder of the tube looks unchanged.

Also identify the related seals and supports required for the maintenance task. Do not assume a sleeve purchase includes an O-ring, compression assembly, or lamp support unless the product description or quotation lists it. Ordering the necessary service parts together helps avoid an incomplete repair when the equipment is already offline.

Do not diagnose the entire system from one part

An alarm or reduced process performance may require broader troubleshooting. Record the alarm wording, operating conditions, recent maintenance, and equipment identification for the service provider. A sleeve replacement is not a substitute for checking the source of the alarm or completing required performance checks after maintenance.

Visible lamp operation is also insufficient evidence of UV performance. Follow the system's prescribed monitoring and verification process. Where the installation provides drinking-water treatment or another critical function, use the equipment manufacturer's response procedure for an alarm or uncertain condition rather than assuming a new consumable resolves the issue.

Prepare the replacement before the shutdown

Confirm the part reference, finish, mounting details, and quantity. If the reference is unreadable, provide the equipment model, measurements, and photographs. Preserve the distinction between an overall sleeve length and a lamp's nominal length. For a custom part, include the drawing revision and any inspection records required with delivery.
